Intro
Hello and welcome to episode 50. A half century of podcast fun – who’d have thought it possible? This week, I’ve an exciting interview for you with Emily Wessel of Tin Can Knits and Rainbow Heirloom. First up, there’s a little MakeItFit2015 chatter as I announce that Louise and I will be hosting a joint measure-up at Indie Burgh Yarn Crawl this weekend. Come along and join in the fun! We’ll be collecting stats from those who are happy to share so we can do a bit of investigation. Next week, we’ll be opening it up online for those who can’t make it to Edinburgh to take part.

Interview
Today we welcome Emily Wessel to the show. Originally from Western Canada, Emily began knitting whilst at grad school studying Architecture. She met her business partner, Alexa Ludeman, when they both worked at the LYS; they were both dabbling in designing at the time and decided to write a book together, 9 Months of Knitting. This then developed on into a series of other books, culminating in their latest collection, Max and Bodhi’s Wardrobe<. Emily does bring her skills from her Architecture background into her design work. Tin Can Knits design patterns which are beautiful in their simplicity; there’s just the right amount of interest there in the knitting, with key elements being highlighted and celebrated in each piece. She shares the story of how she came to design the hugely popular Lush Cardigan.

The addition of baby Max to the Tin Can Knits fold has brought a new level of connectedness to their design work for Emily. She has found motherhood has made her more efficient with her time; something many of us will attest to. She shares some great tips for business and emphasises the need for entrepreneurs and business owners not to take things too personally. Mistakes will happen; learn from them and move on. It sounds an obvious concept, but is one that many business owners struggle with, especially at the start.
