Great Yarns For Baby and Kids Knits
Following on from ep 171, today we are covering some of my go-to yarns for baby and kids knits. Split into 3 sections, we’ll cover 4ply, DK and patterned yarns, at a variety of price points. There are also different fibres covered, so if you don’t like animal fibre, or you don’t want to use synthetics, there is a suggestion for you.
I have added links as far as possible to Uk independent stockists, LYS or the manufacturers themselves. The large e-tailers have enough of an ads budget without me linking to them as well 😉
4-ply Yarns For Baby and Kids Knits
Regia Baby Smiles My First Regia
I make no secret of the fact I absolutely love German sock yarn. It’s indestructible and comes in some ace colours. It’s only natural, therefore, that Regia’s Baby Smiles also made it into this list. At £1.95 per 25g ball, you can easily mix and match colours. Its 75% Wool, 25% Nylon gives all the hardwearing yet easy to care for benefits of a wool-nylon blend, too.
A cost-effective 100% merino yarn, the Drops Baby Merino comes in 50 colours. It’s £3.10 per 50g ball at Purple Sheep Yarns.
This 51% wool, 45% cotton, 2% polyester, 2% nylon blend is a fab choice for a pram blanket, or for garments. Sparkles look great on kids. You can find this yarn at Woolstack at £4.95 per 50g.
Sublime Baby Cashmere Merino Silk 4ply
A more luxury blend for kids knits, at £4.99 per 50g.
Sirdar Snuggly 100% Merino 4ply.
A 100% merino version of Sirdar’s baby yarn line, this yarn retails at £4.29 per 50g ball. The palette is quite pastel, but there are a couple of more modern shades, such as Ocean, shown above.
Bamboo is a great option for baby and kid knits, and this hand dyed 100% bamboo yarn from Nurturing Fibres would be an excellent choice for colourful blankets and garments. It’s £4 per 50g from Ewe and Ply.
DK Yarns For Baby and Kids Knits
Sirdar Snuggly Baby Crofter DK
If you want a yarn that will wash well, looks pretty impressive and is keenly priced, consider the Sirdar Baby Crofter DK. The 55% Nylon, 45% Acrylic, faux Fair Isle effect blend gives ordinary stocking stitch garments a fun twist. Available from PurpleLindaCrafts at £3.19 per 50g.
West Yorkshire Spinners Colour Lab DK
The West Yorkshire Spinners ColourLab DK is a great range for kids knits. Each of the self striping shades comes with toe co-ordinating solids, making it super easy to incorporate cute striped sleeves on jumpers. It’s a 100% British Wool yarn and ticks all the ‘brights’ boxes. Woolstack sell the full range for £5.95 per 100g.
If you want a decent acrylic yarn in a million colours, Stylecraft Special is your friend. Beloved of modular blanket makers for a reason, it is cheap and cheerful whilst also not being squeaky. Find it at Wool Warehouse at £1.95 per 100g.
West Yorkshire Spinners Bo Peep Luxury DK
A workhorse 52% wool, 48% nylon yarn, Bo Peep Luxury DK from West Yorkshire Spinners comes in at £3.79 per 50g.
On the slightly fancier end, with 66% Wool and 34% Silk, the Rowan Baby Merino Silk is £5.99 per 50g.
Patterned Yarns For Baby And Kids Knits
King Cole Big Value Baby 4ply Print
At £3.59 per 100g, this 100% acrylic yarn is affordable and fun. Pair it with the standard solid Big Value at just 99p per ball if you need a solid.
Another mega-fun striped and bright option, at £3.40 per 100g, you can’t go wrong with this acrylic yarn.
James C Brett Baby Twinkle Print DK,
I love a bit of sparkle on a child, so I make no apologies for this awesome yarn with both sparkles and stripes! It’s 65% Acrylic, 28% Supersoft Nylon and 7% Lurex and is available at £2.99 per 100g from PurpleLindaCrafts.
West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply Cocktail
With a 35% BFL content making up over half of the 75% wool in this yarn, you can be sure this Signature 4ply blend will be lustrous and hard wearing. The self striping cocktail range is fun and bright, making it ideal for kids’ and baby knits. It’s £6.95 per 100g at Woolstack.
Ideal for a quick blanket project, this long colour change gradient yarn is the third instalment of my love-in with Sirdar Snuggly. At £8.79 per 150g from PurpleLindaCrafts, it’s very cost effective and the 30% Nylon, 70% Acrylic blend should be easy to care for.
