Introducing the Sock Surgery with Clare Devine

Sock Surgery Square

Banish your sock knitting woes and get some toasty toes!

If you’re a listener to the podcast, you’ll have heard our recent introduction of the bi-weekly Sock Surgery with Clare Devine of Yarn And Pointy Sticks Designs. Aided and abetted by our glamorous assistant, Kate, we’ll be chatting about knitting socks from the very beginning. We’ve already covered subjects such as how to choose yarn and needles, and in the next episode, out on Sunday, we’re getting to the exciting bit: casting on.

What is it?

Each month, starting on 19th January, we’ll be featuring a different construction in a knitalong. As you might want to do a little planning, especially those of you who are stashing down this year or perhaps going to some shows, here are the themes we’re planning for the first three months:

Textured Top/Cuff Down, Heel Flap

Either variegated or semi solid/solid will work for this one, dependent upon your pattern choice. Kate will be knitting Tarsi Grande, one of Clare’s designs. I will be knitting Octarine Socks by Rachel Coopey, in the accompanying yarn from the When Granny Weatherwax Knits Socks yarn club, dyed by Joy at The Knitting Goddess.

Toe Up Vanilla

Go as crazy as you like with this one!

Afterthought Heel

It’s all about the self-stripes here.

Podcast Chat

Every other week, we’ll all be getting together on the podcast to chat through various techniques which are useful in the execution of the chosen sock of the month. We’ll also be discussing any feedback or top tips that are sent in, so if you have any sock knitting hacks, feel free to let us know!

Ravelry Group

There will be a monthly chat thread in the Ravelry group where everyone can join in and chat all things socks. This is to keep the thread manageable and hopefully relevant comments all together. Nobody wants to come into a conversation 6 months after it started and wade through all the background! We’ll also be collating all the great resources in the pages tab of the group for easy referral.

Blog Posts

Clare will be producing a series of supporting blog posts over at her website, where she’ll cover a lot of the technical aspects with tutorials. She also likes to chat fun things to do with socks, so there’s plenty of inspiration to be found there. If it’s general musings, yarn reviews or enabling, expect to find it here at Shinybees. Kate will also be guest blogging occasionally about her lessons learned as a new sock knitter.

Social Socks

We’d love to enable as many people as possible to discover the socky love. We’ll be using the hashtag #SockSurgery, mostly on Instagram and Twitter. Tag your projects and yarn so we can see what you are up to and make some new knitty friends!

Win me in January!

Win me in January!

You can’t have a marathon without a few pit stops to reinvigorate your energy, and nothing quite motivates like the opportunity to win lovely yarn. As such, each month we’ll be doing a giveaway of a skein of the same yarn that Kate is using for her sock project. The first one has been donated by The Golden Skein and is the ‘Hullaballo’ colour way, dyed by BaT’at Hand Dyed Yarns for the final quarter of 2014.
